Tour of Vina & Larry’s Garden
August 11, 2021
It was a lovely day to spend in the garden. A total of twenty some members and invited guests came for the afternoon tour. The garden is 5 years old but the first year was devoted to planting borders of trees and shrubs to create privacy. The rock garden and sprinkler system went in next. Many shrubs and perennials have been added in the subsequent years with a reshaping of the edges.

Stars of the summer shrub garden are hydrangeas, roses, smokebush, ceanothus, perennial fuchsias and hebes. Drifts of perennials include rudbeckia, salvia (multiple varieties), echinacea, daylilies, dahlias, clematis (multiple varieties), lilies, yarrow, helenium, hostas, succulents, perennial geraniums, heuchera, coreopsis, lavender and bergenia.

Lots of pots filled with color grace the patio and drive. It is hand to hand combat with the hordes of deer using Deer Stopper. Without a deer fence, they buy concentrate (it’s cheaper) and use a pump sprayer to broadcast over all plants that deer find addictive.

Irrigation is managed with a sprinkler system that includes drip irrigation. All of the pots are on a separate drip system, hooked up to a faucet and timer. The pots are initially planted with a time release fertilizer and thereafter a soaking spray of Miracle-Gro every other week.

Small cupcakes and lemonade perked up members wilting in the afternoon heat.
