Every year the local garden clubs participate in setting up, decorating and manning the floral building at the Clallam
County Fair. It was SPGC’s turn to wash all of the floral display bottles before and after the fair and set up and
take down the display tables. In addition to monitoring the display barn for one day, club members interacted with
fair attendees, answered questions and promoted fair participation.
This year, SPGC won a First Place, blue ribbon, for our educational exhibit board “Oh My Gourd” that Fran Levien, Sue
Johnson and Jackie and Chris Smith designed and set up for the exhibit. Astrid Granum was the winner of the Guess
How Many Seeds contest. There were 334 seeds in the gourd and she guessed 324. Astrid attended the SPGC
September meeting with her family to accept her prize of a holiday gourd tree ornament, a larger undecorated
one of the same shape and all of the seeds from the gourd.
Della LaCour’s house plants won many blues and some red ribbons. Her fairy garden won a Third Place Honorable
Mention ribbon. Ellen Castleman won a Special Honorable Mention for Creativity with her use of a cat scratching
post in her display. She also contributed many of her special houseplants winning an array of red and blue ribbons.
Connie Tallman’s painted cement blue leaf filled with succulents won Second Place for a Fairy Garden. Her high
heel slipper decorated with succulents and pearls won a First Premium for a Patio Plant, Non-blooming. Her cement
succulent bowl won a First Premium and Honorable Mention for Living Art. Vina Winters yellow abutilon and fuchsia
standard deck planters won blue ribbons. Her cut flowers of dahlias, lilies, echinaceas, yarrow, rudbeckia,
hydrangeas and cut fuchsias won an array of blue and red ribbons. Chris Smith submitted 16 entries with lots of
blue and red ribbons. His lace cap hydrangea entry was an unbelievable, dramatic color of blue. Suzan Mannisto’s
6 orchids swept the Special Category with all blue ribbons and there was a lot of interest in her method of caring
for phalaenopsis orchids. Stephanie Soha submitted several blue ribbon entries from the Pollinator Garden at Pioneer
Memorial Park.
