Early in 2023, the SPGC Board of Directors approved the concept and a budget to put together a party to celebrate the Clubs 75th anniversary and
invite the Sequim community. The key members who volunteered to plan and orchestrate the event were Priscilla Hudson, Joan Whiting, Della
LaCour and Ellen Castleman.
The main event for the day was a presentation by celebrity garden personality, Ciscoe Morris. Other attractions included music by the Old Time
Fiddlers with demonstrations by the spinners and blacksmiths that added to the historic nature of the event. The Club’s history was on
display with an exhibit of the Club’s yearbooks. In the early years, the text may have been hand written and included calligraphy or typed
pages. Some of the books had pressed flowers and were hand sewn together.
Tours of the 1893 Joseph Reyes log cabin and the Memorial Corner headstones were hosted by Club members who offered background on the
historical artifacts.
The Club was standing tall and everything in the Park was ship shape prior to the event. The clubhouse updates included a new roof,
gutters and a paint job. The cemetery headstone restoration was completed. The inside and outside of the log cabin was cleaned
and organized. The grass around all of the major shrubs and trees in the park was killed and mulch applied. The new condo border
bed was planned and planted with trees, shrubs, perennials and annuals. The large stump was removed from the bed on the left side
of the exit drive and a circle of roses and salvia was planted. A bird bath, stepping stones and a decorative metal fence were
installed. A commemorative Prunus serulata “Kwanzan” flowering cherry was planted in honor of the club’s 75th anniversary.
It replaced the same cultivar that had been removed due to advanced age.
