Several members from our Garden Club had a delightful tour with Kelly at Far Reaches Farm and/or Botanical Conservancy gardens in Port Townsend.
Far Reaches is no longer open to the public due to staffing issues, but a good number of their plants are available online.
I can’t possibly repeat the botanical names nor pronounce them but the flowers and plants were many and lovely. And although I didn’t
take a photo of the members who joined the tour, I’ve included a few of my favorite flowers in the photos below.
A really useful tip I learned from Kelly at Far Reaches, is the use of crushed hazelnut shells. The shells are added as a mulch on the
nursery stock as well as the walkways to prevent the pesky moss from overtaking their gardens. He buys the shells in bulk from a
company in Oregon and it got me thinking this might be a good idea for our gardens too.
Priscilla Hudson describes Kelly at Far Reaches as an Encyclopedia of information and I concur. Listening to him instantly recall
the names, habits, and country each specie came from is amazing.
Well, here’s ‘on to the next tour’ and all that we can learn. Enjoy.
