Jamestown S”Klallam elder Harris “Brick” Johnson carved the totem for Pioneer Memorial Park that was installed in May 1969.
Tribal citizen Celeste (Kardonsky) Dybeck was the Irrigation Festival Queen that year. The Sequim
Kiwanis Club repainted the totem in 1987 under Johnson’s direction. Alexis Younglove Erickson,
Dybeck’s daughter, raised the money for the repainting project. Fifty-one years later, Harris
“Brick” Johnson’s nephew, Terry Johnson, did the woodworking repair and recurving. A team
(including Tribal citizens Celeste Dybeck, Cathy MacGregor, Toni O’Connell and interested community
members Anne Weaver, Bobbie Hasselbring, Anna Watters, Sigrid Cummings, Kate Lore, Terry DuBeau,
Tom Jacobson, Mary Lakes, Emma Joy Jacqueth and Aledandra Peck painted the pole with Tribal
citizen/artist Timothy O”Connell as lead.
After a four year absence,
it has returned to the park in new location along the park entrance drive.
